Kian Madjedi

About

Dr. Kian Madjedi is a resident in the program. Prior to moving to Alberta to start residency, he completed his MD at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. As a Rhodes Scholarship finalist and Global Grant Scholar, he earned a Masters’ in Epidemiology at the University of Cambridge, where his dissertation examined genetic associations with Primary Open Angle Glaucoma. He also holds a second master’s degree focused on the Philosophy of Science for which he was named an academic gold medalist.

He is an active member of several UK and US-based research groups focused on identifying gene-environment interactions in glaucoma. His multiple ongoing projects use Mendelian Randomization and ‘big data’  approaches to identify systemic associations with POAG. Most recently, his work identified links with estrogen in a study that won Best Presentation at the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Something
In a previous life, he was highly active in the world of wine, competing in sommelier and wine tasting competitions across Europe and North America. Outside of the eye clinic, he enjoys art, travelling, rowing and a good game of squash.
